Born from the idea that religion unnecessarily sanitizes the human grittiness and unsavoriness of scripture stories, Perez’s 2013 EP “Wheat in the Winepress” attempts to re-scandalize some of these stories in a way that highlights their dysfunction and earthiness. With minimal acoustic and vocal instrumentation, Perez centers the lyrics and brings us into the stories of Gideon, Samson, and David, as well as a few autobiographical songs.
